Possibly the most abstract of the various dimension, spiritual health is challenging to define, develop, and maintain. But this aspect of wellness should not be underestimated. An individual with high levels of spiritual wellness will experience increased physical, social, and emotional health.
One specific definition does not completely summarize spiritual health. While organized religion and prayer - two concepts familiar to most in Western societies - can certainly be part of spiritual health, they are not all that should be considered. Spiritual health can also consist of more broad concepts, such as hope, purpose, and peace.
Some common criteria that fall within the category of spiritual health include belief in a supreme being, unity with a greater force, a guiding sense of meaning and value, an organized religion, balance, introspection, and meaning. While all of these aspects are not necessary to be spiritually healthy, addressing the main concepts can provide a foundational understanding of this way of approaching one's health.
Overall health can be positively impacted by high levels of spiritual health. For example, people experiencing a life-changing event may deal with their situation in a more positive manner if their levels of spiritual health are high. In other words, people can become more resilient by properly addressing their spiritual health.
It is important for everyone to explore what they believe is their own sense of meaning and purpose.
The path to spiritual wellness may involve meditation, prayer, affirmations, or specific spiritual practices that support your connection to a higher power or belief system. Yoga and meditation can also help you develop spiritual wellness.
Having compassion, the capacity for love and forgiveness, altruism, joy, and fulfillment help you enjoy your spiritual health. Your religious faith, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality.
If you are a person engaged in the process of spiritual wellness, you are willing and able to transcend yourself in order to question the meaning and purpose in your life and the lives of others. In addition, you seek to find harmony between that which lies within and the social and physical forces that come from outside.
Whatever helps to bring hope for the future can serve to keep you spiritually healthy. Keeping a positive outlook and remaining hopeful can help the healing process. As whole human beings, all parts of us are connected. By working to keep all parts healthy we can help our bodies, minds, and souls to remain complete.
